Grand Ridge Road - Carrajung-Balook

The Grand Ridge Road is one of the greatest drives available in Gippsland.

Commencing at Willung Sth/Carrajung and journeying for 132km, this road snakes its way along the Strzlecki Ranges, occasionally emerging to striking views of emerald farmlands, pristine coastline and the massive Latrobe Valley powerstations.

Although Polish explorer, Paul Edmund 'Count' Strzelecki endured a 22 day struggle through the dense mountain forest of South Gippsland in 1840, the beauty of the region did not escape his attention. The pioneers who followed had to fell 90 metre trees and clear dense forest to eke a living from the slopes. The back breaking work of two generations of settlers cleared much of the original mountain ash. Much of the cleared land in the the Eastern Strzeleckis was eventually reclaimed by the bush.

Today, the Grand Ridge Road traverses the bush and settled areas of the Strzelecki's providing the visitor with a spectacular drive on largely unsealed road through a number of small towns and areas with a rich history.

Commencing at Willung Sth/Carrajung, the road climbs though pine plantations to Blackwarry, where spectacular views of corner inlet and Wilsons Prom can be photographed on one side of the road, and spectacular views of the Latrobe Valley on the other.

Continuing along the road the township of Balook is reached, home to the famous Tarra-Bulga National Park and the Park visitors centre.

The Guesthouse at Balook affords visitors a unique holiday experience amid the cool temperate rainforest of Tarra-Bulga.

From Balook, the visitor can return to Wellington via Traralgon, or continue to Yarram down the picturesque Tarra Valley Rd, or journey on to Mirboo North via the Grand Ridge Road exiting at Seaview near Warragul.

Please note travelling the road does not require a 4x4 vehicle and is quite suitable for normal cars, however the road is used by log trucks and is narrow in parts. The road is unsealed from the Tarra Valley Rd intersection approx 6km from Balook and in parts between Carrajung and the Tarra-Bulga National Park.

Suggested itinerary: Travel to Yarram (A440), then to Tarra-Bulga National Park by the C484 stopping to photograph waterfalls en route. Visit the Tarra-Bulga visitor centre and famous suspension bridge at Balook and then return to Wellington via the Grand Ridge Rd to Carrajung and return to either Sale or Yarram via the C482. Distance approx 75km - 90% sealed road - 10% good quality unsealed.
