Lake Guthridge Parklands

Lake Guthridge Parklands is a major recreational area within Sale being the combination of the Lake Guthridge and Lake Guyatt precincts, the Sale Botanic Gardens, and the Regional Aquatic Complex.

The precinct showcases historically significant botanic gardens, many leisure activities, wetlands and lakes, wildlife and cultural activities.

Lake Guthridge Parklands offers the visitor over 35 hectares of botanic gardens, walking trails, indigenous artworks, a contemporary fauna park containing Red Necked Wallabies, Pademelons and Parma Wallabies set into a landscaped natural environment with excellent viewing opportunities.

Combined with sensory gardens, abundant seating, a significant childrens playground, under cover bbq facilities and free tennis courts, the Lake Guthridge Parkland precinct provides a delightful setting for enjoying a leisurely few hours.

Before settlement, the gardens and lakes were part of the swamply floodplains of Flooding Creek and were inhabited by the Gunai/Kunai people for many thousands of years sustained by the many swamps, rivers and creeks surrounding Flooding Creek. River redgums still bear the scars of bark removed to make canoes.

The Sale Botanic Gardens, the key feature of the Lake Guthridge Parklands precinct owe their botanic heritage to Barron Ferdinand Von Mueller, the first state botanist, and Mr William Guilfoilye, the then director of the Royal Melbourne Botanic Gardens.

An interpretive brochure is available for download or from the Wellington Visitor Information Centre - Sale.
