Lake Glenmaggie

Just five kilometres north of Heyfield sits Lake Glenmaggie.

Under the broad expanse of water lies the remains of the original township of Glenmaggie and the farms which occupied the shallow valley.

Lake Glenmaggie is one of the most popular inland boating venues east of Melbourne, with power boats and yachts utilising the Lake. It is also a popular fishing spot for trout, carp and redfin. Several caravan and camping areas are situated nearby.

The Lake stores sufficient water, in a normal year, to meet all irrigation requirements of the district. The townships of Maffra and Heyfield receive their domestic water from the Lake. Electricity is generated by a turbine driven from water releases at the dam wall.

The weir wall was commenced in 1919 and by the mid-1920s the waters of the Macalister River had been held back to create an extensive irrigation scheme, known as the Macalister Irrigation System, which serviced the sugar beet and dairy industries. This original dam held 130,000 ML (Mega Litres) when full.

After World War II, extra water was required to enable returning soldiers to settle on land and farm within the district. This was achieved by raising the wall 3.6m by placing 14 radial gates along the top of the original wall. This increased the capacity to 190,000 ML.

In 1987, the dam wall was strengthened to withstand major floods and earthquakes by drilling through the wall into the bedrock and installing 70 re-stressable steel cables. This effectively tied the wall to the ground to resist overturning.
