Maffra is an attractive town lined with trees and buildings from the nineteenth century. The main street is named after Mafra in Portugal. Early settlers in Gippsland came from the Monaro Region in NSW and had fought in Spain and Portugal during the Penninsula War.

The surrounding district was settled in the 1840’s by Europeans. By 1862 Maffra started to grow when a Punt boat transported hopeful miners across the Macalister River to the goldfields.

From 1896 to 1948 Maffra was home to Australia’s only viable sugar beet industry. After 1948 Maffra farm land was gradually subdivided into cattle raising properties which has become present dairy and vegetable farms.

There is a great sense of history surrounding the town highlighted by the original shop verandas and grand homesteads such as “Duart”, the residence of the Hon. Allan McLean, Premier of Victoria for a short time before Federation.

Home to the Murray Goulburn Milk Factory located on the Macalister River. During annual peak production period, millions of litres of milk are processed weekly for the Australia and export markets. Maffra is widely heralded as a regional lifestyle alternative for many city folk looking to relocate to the country. Known for its hospitality, tranquillity and social wellbeing.

One of the highlights to visit is the Gippsland Vehicle Collection which has an outstanding rotating display of interesting vehicles: cars, motorbikes, machinery, historic vehicles, carriages, trucks and auto memorabilia. Located in the massive shed which was the old vegetable de-hydrating factory built during WW2. Open Friday to Monday and all School Holidays.

The old Beet Processing plant houses displays and audio visual presentations that inform visitors of Maffra’s Sugar Beet industry which operated in the area from the 1890’s to the end of World War II. By appointment only contact the Visitor Information Centre.
